Māori Clay People Poems contemplate Indigenous connections to the land and were inspired by Hineukurangi, the Māori atua or goddess of clay. Specifically, the poems are about desire, and connections between people, clay, and our collective futures. The image is a painted upoko whakairo (carved head) impression of Hineukurangi as Marama saw her on Treaty 7 land whilst undertaking an Indigenous visual arts residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Canada.
